Save Port Royal – Protect Our Community & Environment

The Issue

Save Port Royal – Protect Our Land, Heritage & Environment!

Port Royal is under threat. Large events at Fort Rocky, a protected area, are being approved without consulting residents and without proper environmental safeguards. Under the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) Act, these lands cannot be disturbed, yet we see unchecked development while our community is left behind.

At the same time, the government has failed to deliver on promises—land was promised, money was collected, but homes were never built. Meanwhile, the football field and cruise pier, which had historic buildings, have been taken over. Residents of Port Royal have not seen new housing in over 50 years, only minimal refurbishments. This is unjust!

While event organizers profit, Port Royal bears the risks—coastal damage, pollution, displacement, and lack of proper infrastructure. We will not allow our home to be ignored and exploited any longer!

We Demand Immediate Action:

1️⃣ Environmental Protection & Compliance – NEPA must investigate breaches of the NRCA Act and enforce environmental regulations to protect our natural habitat.

2️⃣ No More Exclusion – Port Royal residents must be consulted before any event is approved.

3️⃣ Revenue for Community Development – A percentage of event proceeds must go to Port Royal for education, housing, infrastructure, and social programs.

4️⃣ Scholarships & Jobs for Residents – Event organizers must prioritize Port Royal residents for jobs, vendor opportunities, and a scholarship fund.

5️⃣ Public Transparency & Accountability – Officials must disclose environmental impact reports and show how the community benefits.

6️⃣ Access to Community Spaces – The football field must be replaced with one of equal or greater value and the cruise pier must be made accessible without charge to the people of Port Royal for community events

7️⃣ Housing & Infrastructure Development – The government must deliver new homes and modern infrastructure, as promised to the citizens of Port Royal.

8️⃣ NO Concrete Structures on Protected Land – The government and private entities are NOT allowed to erect permanent concrete structures in Fort Rocky or other protected areas. The natural habitat must be preserved, and Port Royal must not be further displaced.

We also strongly suggest the removal of those currently responsible for the protection of our protected sites, as they have clearly failed to fulfill their duties in safeguarding the integrity of Fort Rocky and other designated protected areas. Their lack of oversight and negligence in enforcing the laws and regulations meant to preserve our natural and cultural heritage is unacceptable and has contributed to the ongoing threats facing our community. We call for a reassessment of their roles and the appointment of individuals who are truly committed to the protection of our environment and heritage.

Port Royal is not just a name—it is a living, breathing community with real people who have been systematically ignored. Our heritage, environment, and homes are at stake. If we do not take a stand now, we risk losing our land, our history, and our future.
