The Issue

For 65 years, Party Favors has been more than a bakery and party store — it has been part of Brookline's Coolidge Corner neighborhood. Generations of families have walked through its doors at 1356 Beacon St. to pick up birthday cakes, find the perfect party decorations, and mark the moments that matter most.

On Saturday, owners Mary Lynn and John Pergantis announced that July 15 will be the last day Party Favors is open. After buying the business in 1992 and running it for 35 years, they wrote that it is time to move on. "For 35 years, you have allowed us to be part of your birthdays, weddings, graduations, baby showers, holidays, and so many of life's special moments," they wrote. "We have watched families grow, celebrated milestones with generations of customers, and built friendships that we will cherish forever."

What Mary Lynn and John built is exactly the kind of place that makes a neighborhood feel like home — and exactly the kind of place that, once it's gone, never comes back. Across America, family-owned shops like Party Favors are closing at an alarming rate, replaced by empty storefronts or chain stores that don't know your name.

This petition calls on the Brookline community, local leaders, and anyone who has ever had a Party Favors cake at their table: let's find a way to keep this institution alive. Whether a new owner steps forward, local support materializes, or the community rallies loudly enough to change the outcome — this story doesn't have to end on July 15.
