Save our farms: A minor adjustment to the planned Highway 404 corridor

Save our farms: A minor adjustment to the planned Highway 404 corridor
The Issue
We call upon the Government of Ontario to adjust the planned corridor for the final six (6) kilometres of Highway 404, as laid out in the 2051 Plan.
The specific section in question runs from Durham Road 23 (Lakeridge Road) to Highway 12, where the planned extension ends. Running in a roughly straight line, it would cut through several active farms.
(See: https://files.ontario.ca/mto-ggh-transportation-plan-en-2022-03-10.pdf)
We request the corridor be adjusted to follow one of two options:
- the existing path of Brock Township's 14th Concession, part of which has fallen into disuse and is overgrown.
- continue alongside Hwy. 48, twinning the highway with 2 lanes in either direction.
This would spare the farms in question, and potentially save the government millions of dollars in expropriation costs associated and benefit all taxpayers.
Farmland is not just property, it's a way of life. It’s woven into rural cultural identity and is vital to the food security of our province. My family has stewarded one of these farms for nearly a century. Over generations, we have witnessed drastic changes, but none as threatening as the proposed highway project.
The people of Ontario have the right to determine their economic destinies. We should not be forced to accept "fair market value" for our property as determined by the government of the day – regardless of which party is in power.
All we ask for is a minor shift in the planned corridor. Stand with us, support our cause and sign this petition to preserve agricultural tradition and ensure a sustainable future for all our generations to come.
