The Issue

Oakwood Theme Park in Pembrokeshire is deeply rooted in the hearts of generations of families and students who have had the pleasure of experiencing its magic. A true gem in Welsh tourism, it has now closed its doors as of March 4th, 2025, cutting off a source of joy and adventure for so many. While rising costs have played a role, the real issue lies in years of neglect and mismanagement by Aspro Parks Ltd, which has systematically run the park into the ground.

For over a decade, visitors and enthusiasts have raised concerns over Aspro’s lack of investment, poor maintenance, and declining ride availability. Attractions were frequently out of order, facilities were left in disrepair, and staff levels were cut back to unsustainable levels.

One visitor noted: "Oakwood in recent years has been a shadow of its former self. Rides were constantly closed, the place looked tired, and it felt like Aspro just didn’t care anymore”.  - https://towersstreet.com/talk/threads/oakwood-discussion.1375/page-56

Another remarked: "I went in 2024, and it was terribly presented. It looked abandoned in some areas. It was obvious then this would happen”. – TowersStreet https://towersstreet.com/talk/threads/oakwood-discussion.1375/page-56

Instead of investing to restore Oakwood’s reputation as a premier UK attraction, Aspro allowed it to deteriorate, with some of its most iconic rides sitting dormant. Earlier this year, the beloved Drenched water ride was dismantled, marking another nail in the coffin.

The company’s statement claims: “In the entire history of Aspro, we have never closed any park or attraction… Unfortunately, we could no longer see a sustainable way forward”.

Yet, Aspro is now set to strip Oakwood of its remaining assets to ‘improve’ other parks—a final betrayal of the community that has supported this park for decades.

However, Oakwood’s story doesn’t have to end here. This setback is also part of a larger issue: the underinvestment in infrastructure and transport by successive Welsh Governments, which has made it harder for attractions like Oakwood to thrive. While Aspro’s failure must be addressed, so too must the broader economic neglect that allowed this to happen.

Now, during this consultation period, we have an opportunity to draft a plan for Oakwood’s revival. We must demand that the Welsh Government step up, recognise the importance of Oakwood, and work to restore it before it becomes another lost piece of our national heritage.

Let’s not surrender Oakwood to history. Sign this petition and send a clear message: we demand action, investment, and accountability—before it’s too late.
