SAVE Newry Swimming pool Urgently Address Failings at Newry Leisure Centre

The Issue

I Nicola Grant and the undersigned, express our deep concern regarding the ongoing issues at Newry Leisure Centre, specifically:

1. The prolonged closure of the swimming pool since February 2024.
2. The substandard maintenance and repair delays affecting gym equipment.

Background
The swimming pool at Newry Leisure Centre has been closed since late February 2024 due to an issue with the hydraulic system of its moving floor. Despite assurances from NMDDC that works would be completed in December 2024 and the pool reopened in January 2025, there is growing speculation that these timelines will not be met. This speculation has been fueled by reports of extensive delays in refurbishment works, including:

- Removal and replacement of tiles in the main pool, learner pool, surrounding walkways, and changing areas.
- Leaks in the boiler room affecting the main halls.
- Structural issues, including indications that the building has shifted.

The Newry Reporter has highlighted these delays and the lack of transparency surrounding the decision-making process. For instance, decisions to close the pool for extended periods were made during confidential sessions of council committees without debate in open chambers.

Furthermore, the gym facilities at Newry Leisure Centre are also in disrepair, with as many as 11 pieces of equipment out of order, some for over three months. While council officials have cited delays in obtaining parts, this prolonged disruption has led to dissatisfaction among users, who feel they are not receiving value for money.

In light of these ongoing issues, we respectfully call on Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council to:

1. Conduct an independent investigation* into the delays and failures in managing the refurbishment of the swimming pool, including:
   - The decision-making process behind the closures.
   - The adequacy of project planning, oversight, and contractor performance.
   - The reasons for the reported structural issues and leaks.

2. Provide transparency by making all reports, timelines, and updates related to the refurbishment project publicly available.

3. Ensure accountability by reviewing council policies to prevent future decisions being made in confidential sessions without public scrutiny.

4.Address gym equipment issues by expediting repairs and ensuring robust maintenance schedules to avoid similar disruptions in the future.

Why This Matters
Newry Leisure Centre is a vital resource for the community, providing essential services for physical and mental health, youth engagement, and social interaction. The ongoing failings are not only a breach of public trust but also a significant barrier to community well-being.

We urge NMDDC to take immediate action to restore confidence in its ability to manage public facilities effectively.
