Save youths transgender rights. TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS!!!
The Issue
Republican lawmakers in Kentucky have passed a bill that prohibits transgender minors from receiving gender-affirming care, allows educators to refuse to refer to transgender students by their preferred pronouns, and would not allow schools to discuss sexual orientation or gender identity with students of any age.
Georgia will ban most gender-affirming surgeries and hormone replacement therapies for transgender people under 18 with a new bill signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp on Thursday.
Lawmakers gave final approval to Senate Bill 140 on Tuesday, despite impassioned pleas from Democrats and LGBTQ advocates against what has become the most fiercely contested bill of Georgia's 2023 legislative session. Kemp signed the bill in private, without the ceremony the governor sometimes uses to celebrate new laws.
These bills, if enforced, would prohibit gender-affirming care for minors, such as surgical procedures or the use of certain hormones, and calls for healthcare providers to terminate or set a timeline to end treatment for patients already undergoing such care.
I am Jacob, but I go by Michaela. I'm a 17-year-old transwoman from Cincinnati, Ohio fighting for a change. After seeing that we were getting our transgender rights taken away, I screamed my lungs out, then cried in the shower. They don't know what it's like to finally wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and see who you indeed are, and they don't know what it's like to have your family and friends ditch you because you're altering your life.
I'm writing this because I care deeply about this and it won't happen without the support of people like you. Starting a petition isn't something I would normally do, but I was moved to do so because I am a transgender minor myself, and I find it wrong how bills are being passed that restrict gender-affirming care. I see this as a massive trans genocide in an attempt to snuff us out in the cruelest way possible. At least 32 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed in the United States in 2022. We should have rights to our bodies and who we want to be. I know I'm not alone and together we can make this change happen. Please sign and share! https://www.change.org/youthtransrights
