Save Louisiana’s Overcrowded Animal Shelters

Save Louisiana’s Overcrowded Animal Shelters
The Issue
Right now, animal shelters across Louisiana are at a breaking point. With the rising cost of rent, groceries, and basic necessities, more and more families are being forced to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their beloved pets. Inflation isn’t just squeezing household budgets — it’s also overwhelming our shelters.
In many parts of Louisiana, shelters are reporting record intakes with nowhere to house animals safely. Kennels meant for one or two dogs are now holding three or more. Staff and volunteers are overworked and underfunded. Some shelters are being forced to consider euthanasia, not because they want to, but because they simply don’t have the resources to provide humane care for the rising numbers.
No one should have to give up a pet because they can’t afford food or vet care — and no shelter should be forced to turn animals away because of a lack of funding.
We’re calling on the Louisiana Legislature and Governor to immediately approve emergency funding for municipal and nonprofit animal shelters across the state. This funding should be used to:
- Expand shelter capacity
- Support community pet food banks
- Provide emergency vet care for surrendered animals
- Help families keep their pets through temporary financial assistance
These are not luxuries. They’re urgent, life-saving measures to protect animals and support struggling communities. The state has stepped up before in times of disaster — and this is a disaster for animals and the people who love them.
With your signature, we can show our lawmakers that Louisianans care about their animals, their neighbors, and their shelters. Let’s send a clear message: no more turning our backs on pets in crisis.
Sign this petition to demand emergency shelter funding — because every animal deserves safety, and every family deserves support.
