Save Litchfield National Park from gamba catastrophe!
Save Litchfield National Park from gamba catastrophe!
The issue
Ask the new Northern Territory Government to take immediate and effective action to protect the NT's beautiful Litchfield National Park from looming ecosystem collapse, safety risks to visitors and damage to Park infrastructure - due to the spread of invasive, highly-flammable gamba grass.
By signing this petition you're supporting an Open Letter to the Government from 13 organisations, 31 businesses and 51 scientists and environmental professionals, which was placed as a full page ad in the NT News (in shortened form) on Saturday Nov. 23rd. You can share this Open Letter around using this Facebook Post if you wish.
The Open Letter was also tabled in the NT Legislative Assembly on November 27th, 2024 by Hon. Kat McNamara (Greens), who also moved a motion to debate the issue in the LA in 2025. Note that this petition and petitioners names as of Nov 23rd 2024 have already been presented by Ms McNamara to the NT Legislative Assembly. However we will ensure any petitioners signing after that date will be presented to the Chief Minister and Tourism Ministers in 2025.
What's all this about?
Last year Charles Darwin University scientists warned that unless effective action is taken soon, it may be too late to save the Territory’s most visited national park - from becoming a mess of four metre high gamba grass, unpleasant and unsafe to visit.
Watch this short video which explains the dire threat to the Park according to CDU scientists, as well as action they say will be practical, achievable and will protect the most precious areas of the park from the gamba threat.
Gamba burns many times hotter than native grasses. That’s how year by year it out-competes trees and other plants as it spreads and takes over Litchfield's ancient and beautiful savanna landscapes - unless we take action to stop it.
