Kithurst Hill access road and car park at the top of the South Downs, above Storrington on the B2139 is due to close to the general public on the 22nd December 2022.

West Sussex County Council who currently manage the car park have withdrawn their services for future management and the landowner is therefore unable to insure the car park for use by the public. Other car park management companies have been explored by the landowner, but due to lack of electricity supply these alternatives are not feasible. 

The South Downs National Park authority were also involved in discussions to take over the management of the car park, however they have now pulled out of the commitment and discussions with the landowner and WSCC.  So the owner is left in the position of having to close the access road and car park to the public from the 22nd of December 2022.

The car park is a vital link to the Southdowns Way and National Park for residents of Storrington / Pulborough and a great many visitors from further afield. It allows for easy, safe access for vehicles and horse box parking so walkers, runners, riders and bikes etc can enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty. Crucially for those with mobility issues, locally there are no other suitable access points.

If this car park is closed the nearest alternatives are Washington and Whiteways which leaves an 18 mile stretch of the South Downs National park without a fit for purpose car park and access point.

We believe the South Downs National Park Authority and West Sussex County Council MUST continue discussions with the landowner to find a sustainable solution to manage this car park and ensure that this vital access point is available for us ALL to be able to enjoy the South Downs National park.
