Save Kariong Sacred Lands

The issue

Only a short walk from the famous Grandmother Tree and Kariong Hieroglyphs, on the Central Coast of NSW, the Local Aboriginal Land Council (DLALC) are planning a housing development. This is against the wishes of the Traditional Bloodline Custodians, locals and environmentalists who continue to advocate tirelessly for protection of this magnificent area.

This cut and fill (taking out all the rock, trees and vegetation) development would destroy land which is zoned E2, the highest environmental protection private land can receive. This is due to the endangered wetlands, threatened species, cultural heritage and sacred sites on the land and it being a Federally listed Area of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS).

If this rezoning and subsequent development is allowed to go ahead it will create a terrible precedent for the destruction of hectares of bushland, not only on the on the Central Coast of NSW, but for wider NSW, as new legislation makes it easier for Local Aboriginal Land Councils to develop their claimed lands.

To the Speaker, and Members of the House of Representatives.

This petition from certain citizens of Australia calls on the NSW State Minister for Environment and Planning and the House to protect the land at 300 Woy Woy Road Kariong, known as Kariong Sacred Lands. This land

·       is currently zoned by the NSW State Government as Environmental Conservation (C2), due to its ecological and cultural value, and

·       is home to endangered flora and fauna

·       is extremely important to the local Traditional Owners

We ask the House to maintain this C2 protection zoning or include the land in adjoining Brisbane Water National Park.

Please sign this petition to ask our elected leaders to -

*Listen to the Local Traditional Owners of this area

*Stop the destruction of endangered species

*Find a way for the Land Council to profit without the destruction of our precious bushland
