Save Kardinia Park Pool

The issue

Don’t close our pool!

Kardinia Park Pool is a much-loved and important asset for the greater Geelong community. Swimmers from as far as the Bellarine Peninsula come here to train. Geelong Swimming Club, the Boroughcoutas Swimming Club, the Geelong Sharks, Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club, and the Geelong contingent of the Melbourne Swim Club all train at this facility. Countless schools also have their school community swimming events here at Kardinia Park Pool.

Returning Kardinia Park Pool to a seasonal facility, which is closed during winter, would be a terrible outcome, one that would negatively impact the health and well-being of our community, as well as disadvantage swimmers from the Geelong region when competing against their peers from other regions across Victoria and Australia.

Kardinia Park is the only 50-metre pool available in the region open for winter. Leisurelink in Waurn Ponds, although built as a 50-metre pool, is permanently set up as 2 x 25-metre pools. The Waterworld facility in Norlane will also be closing in June for renovations, further diminishing the options for swimmers in the greater Geelong region.

Geelong is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026. Yet as the city prepares to host a premier international sporting event, the council is proposing to shut down an important sporting facility.

The City of Greater Geelong’s 2023-24 to 2026-27 budget proposal claims to have been designed to build a “healthy, caring and inclusive community” which will “increase active living” and “improve mental well-being and social connection”.

The council’s budget proposal says: “A healthy community is one where everyone has the opportunity to experience the best possible health and well-being.”

But closing Kardinia Park Pool for winter would only disadvantage the physical and mental well-being of the community and jeopardise the social connections built through the clubs and groups that use this facility.

Keep our pool open year-round, so the community has the best chance to be healthy, happy, and connected.
