Save Jutland Place

Save Jutland Place
The Issue
Home is not just a place, it's where our hearts reside. Imagine the heartbreak of being told, as a person with a disability, that you have mere months to uproot your life and find a new place to call home. This is the fate awaiting 6 adults with learning disabilities in Egham.
Four decades ago, Mencap opened the doors of hope and sanctuary at Jutland Place, Egham, providing a haven for adults with learning disabilities. It was a beacon of progress, opened by the Mayor of Runnymede at a special event. Yet, in a cruel twist of fate, Mencap, gripped by financial woes, has decided to shut its care provision in June.
Surrey County Council claims to be scrambling for alternatives, but the reality is stark: there may not be a suitable local solution that caters to the unique needs of the residents.
Under the Care Act 2014, Surrey County Council must ensure that the wellbeing of the residents is at the forefront of any decisions that are made about them, without creating a risk that their needs could get worse.
Forcing relocation out of the local area will negatively affect the physical and mental wellbeing of the Jutland Place residents. Some of their relatives do not have adequate access to transport, preventing them from visiting their loved ones. A move away from Jutland Place could also threaten access to crucial day services that the residents rely on for their health. The residents have known each other for many years and formed important friendships. If they are split apart, the residents could face social isolation.
The building itself is owned by Runnymede Borough Council, who have confirmed that they have no urgent need to seek possession of the property. Despite this lifeline being offered, the lack of clarity from Surrey County Council casts uncertainty over the future.
We implore Surrey County Council to act swiftly and secure a new care and support provider for Jutland Place before Mencap withdraws in June. Please help us to prevent local residents from having the rug pulled from under them.
