Save historic Saint Francis Hospital from Demolition

The Issue

Being my age, I don’t feel as if I get a voice in the action made through our city so I ask for your help. I have always been fascinated in the history of my city, as I research the roots of what built our city, a reoccurring name always rises. Saint Francis Hospital, I believe the importance of Saint Francis comes from its roots as a hospital. It gave care and commitment through its over 100 year life span as a hospital. Originally it was built in 1887 to treat patients ailing from injuries on the continental railroads.

Later on it’s its life it became a tuberculosis sanatorium, offering the plentiful fresh air and prepossessing mountains that gave hope and guidance to people suffering from the bacterium. It was a prominent piece of Colorado Springs, being one of the first hospitals in Colorado to offer a range of surgical procedures. Being its plentiful history, I don’t think it should me forgotten, as we chase the drive for new technology and advancements in society, we deem to leave behind the grounds of what built our city. I hope you can join me and help us save Saint Francis.

As it’s been nearly 15 years since its abandonment, no preservation steps have been taken in order to prevent decaying structures. Water damage from 2010 still has not been repaired. As more time continues to pass, the future of the property seems uncertain.  Conservation efforts would deem vital at this time for the property. What was in nearly perfect condition just 8 years ago has been destroyed by the Colorado Springs teen population. Light fixtures hammered, copper stolen, you would be lucky to find glass unbroken.

In order to make aware and fund this project, I want to show that people care about the historical significance and presence in buildings such as Saint Francis, I ask that you sign this petition to further raise awareness for the chance of demolition of Saint Francis. Saint Francis was a vital institution in the growth of Colorado Springs, a lot of its history has been silenced. In order to make voices heard, I made this petition to outreach to people in Colorado Springs who also care about the cities history and preservation of historical buildings.

Nurses moving patients into the new building in 1930.

The company that now owns the property (Norwood Development Group) has nothing to do with the current condition of the building. In order to rehabilitate the building would cost an exponential amount of money. At this point in the buildings life hope is dim. However there is still agreements can still be reached in order to preserve the 29 Building. A more recent problem has been the teen population trespassing, and destroying what’s left. Just a few months ago the condition of the property was brittle now it is becoming more dangerous to be in.
