Save Heathfield School

The Issue

The Girls Day School Trust (GDST), a charitable organisation responsible for Heathfield School in Pinner, has recently announced its decision to ‘merge’ Heathfield School with a substantially larger school – Northwood College in Northwood. This ‘merger’ in reality means the closure of Heathfield School from September 2014. The site will be abandoned and likely sold on.

This announcement has come as a complete shock to teachers, parents, and most importantly the girls currently studying there! GDST have thought it best to offer no consultative period to discuss this matter or dispel any concerns individuals may have prior to this announcement!

Heathfield School is one of the UK's leading independent day schools for girls. It has a long history (est. 1900) and provides education for more than 400 girls from the age of 3-18. The 'merger' with Northwood College will eradicate not only the ‘Heathfield’ name but also its long standing traditions, which, during its existence has elevated it to becoming a recognised school of excellence. The School Guide ranks Heathfield School no.66 in the U.K. and is a Top 5 GDST school.

Heathfield School is not loss making, there is no comparable school in the area and instead of accepting the advantage of having a smaller school, the Trustees choose to dismiss these facts. Heathfield School should be further modernised (cf. Notting Hill & Ealing GDST) and in conjunction with parents a prolonged marketing campaign be given an opportunity!

This is not a done deal and with enough support WE CAN make a change!

Heathfield School does not deserve to be closed down!

Parents of Heathfield School, Pinner.

Dear Parents Thank you for your petition regarding the merger of Heathfield School with Northwood College. We appreciate the strength of feeling among girls, parents, alumnae and the whole school community, who are understandably passionate about their school. The decision has been made by the trustees of the GDST after very careful consideration, and because they firmly believe it is in the best interests of the school. We have explained, both verbally and in writing, the rationale behind this decision, which has been taken to ensure girls currently at Heathfield continue to enjoy a broad and deep education which brings out their full potential. We have taken steps to ensure continuity of education for the girls currently at Heathfield, which is the GDST’s priority, and the trustees do not intend to reverse their decision. As we have said, we are very keen to work with parents, girls and the school community at Heathfield School to get their input and to ensure that the heritage and all that is best from Heathfield gets carried forward into the newly merged school. We are very grateful to those who have volunteered to be involved in this. Yours sincerely Lorna Cocking, Chairman Helen Fraser, Chief Executive On behalf of the Girls’ Day School Trust
