Save Greek and Latin at Queen's U. (Canada)

Save Greek and Latin at Queen's U. (Canada)
The Issue
Due to budgetary forecasting, the Provost’s office at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, has stated that “undergraduate course sections with enrolments of fewer than 10 students cannot be scheduled” for the next academic year and for the foreseeable future. This appears to herald the end of teaching ancient Greek and Latin—usually offered in small classes—at Queen’s, not to mention a number of other small classes outside the Department of Classics and Archaeology (please see the related petition https://www.change.org/p/stop-cuts-to-queen-s-arts-and-science).
After 182 years of continuous study—the longest tenure of any courses on the Queen's campus—these vital and vibrant cultural languages will be cancelled because someone has been unable to balance their budget (not us: the Department of Classics and Archaeology has always been fiscally responsible and usually produces a surplus). As a result of these threats, in the words of the Head of Department, Prof. Daryn Lehoux, "A longtime beacon of first-class scholarship and teaching of Classics and the Humanities in Canada, Queen’s Classics and Archaeology is now directly threatened with dilution, dissolution, or worse... Needless to say, the loss of Greek and Latin would be the loss of our departmental identity. It will be a crushing blow to our discipline in this country, not to mention Queen’s attractiveness to serious students, researchers, and future faculty members” (for Prof. Lehoux's full statement, please see https://www.queensu.ca/classics/).
Your voice as fellow classicists, humanists, or enthusiasts can make a significant impact now and convey the importance of teaching Greek and Latin to our administrators. Thank you in advance for your support of the teaching of Greek and Latin at Queen's and helping us to ensure that these crucial classes are taught not only next year, but for a long time in the future.
Should you wish to write formally to the Principal, Provost and the Dean of Arts and Science in order to save Greek and Latin at Queen's, please do not hesitate to do so at the following addresses:
- Principal (https://www.queensu.ca/principal/contact; principal@queensu.ca);
- Provost (https://www.queensu.ca/provost/contact-us; provost@queensu.ca);
- Dean of Arts and Science (https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/staff-and-faculty/support/deans-office; deanartsci@queensu.ca).
It will no doubt be useful to add Prof. Lehoux (lehoux@queensu.ca) in cc/ to your email or letter.
UPDATE: if you wish to make any letters to the aforementioned public, please consider submitting them to the Queen's Journal: journal_letters@ams.queensu.ca. Thank you again for all your support!
