Save Gormanston Beach - No Port Here

Save Gormanston Beach - No Port Here
The Issue
NOTE - THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO DONATE TO SIGN THIS PETITION
Drogheda Port is attempting to establish a deep-water port at Gormanston Beach in County Meath.
The proposed port development would:
Damage the environment: Construction of a new port inevitably causes damage to the marine and land environment. It will also take many years to complete. Port operations can lead to serious environmental impacts on air, water and land.
Destroy part of the nation’s archaeological heritage: The group of passage graves on either side of the mouth of the Delvin River (known as the Bremore/Gormanston group) is believed by most historians and archaeological experts in Ireland to mark the arrival of that culture from the Iberian Peninsula and to be the precursor of later developments such as Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth in the Boyne Valley. This area is therefore of huge archaeological significance and importance.
Endanger local wildlife: This area is home to many species including migratory birds. The port will disrupt their habitats and put these species at further risk.
Increase traffic and heavy vehicle pollution: The port would bring a significant increase in truck traffic on our already busy roads, increasing noise, air pollution, and the risk of accidents.
Destroy one of the most scenic beaches in this part of the North-East: The very significant population increases in East Meath and Fingal will require beaches as a vital leisure space.
Undermine economic reality: The previous rationale for a port in Bremore was that Dublin Port would reach capacity during this decade; that never materialised. Now the rationale is green energy and wind farms. Along the east coast, Ireland is well served with major ports at Dublin, Rosslare Europort and, in an inclusive All Ireland context, Belfast.
Expose huge governance failures at all levels of government: There is no mention of a requirement for a new port in Ireland in the National Development Plan 2040. There are conflicts of interest at local, national and EU political level coupled with an over dependence on one favoured private developer which will pose an unacceptable long-term risk to public finances.

We urge our politicians, our county councils and all concerned citizens to reject this port development and preserve Gormanston as a real community space for future generations.
Please sign this petition to help us save Gormanston Beach, this amazing natural treasure and amenity, from destruction.
