Save Franklin Pool for Yakima Community
The Issue
Elderly residents of Yakima find solace and physical relief at Franklin Pool, where water walking has become an integral part of their health routine. Not only for the elderly, the pool serves heart patients offering a safe way to exercise through swimming and water walking. For young families, it’s a hub of joy and learning, providing essential swimming lessons that are both educational and fun. During the summer, Franklin Pool becomes a vibrant spot for recreational activities, creating cherished memories for the entire community.
Franklin Pool is more than just an aquatic facility—it is a cornerstone of our Yakima community and has been since 1957 when it first opened. It offers a safe and accessible location for all ages to engage in healthy activities, promoting physical fitness, well-being, and community engagement. With an escalating need for such inclusive public amenities, its role has never been more critical.
Despite its importance, Franklin Pool is facing threats of closure due to budget cuts by the City Council. This decision would strip Yakima's residents of a vital community resource. Yakima’s unique geographical location, with its often harsh summer temperatures, makes Franklin Pool an invaluable community asset for many elderly, health conscious swimmers, young families and children of all ages. It is one of the few places where residents can cool off safely and affordably.
Evidence from several health studies illustrates the benefits of aquatic exercise particularly for the elderly and individuals recovering from heart ailments. These studies reinforce the anecdotal experiences of our community members—showing that such facilities contribute profoundly to public health. Moreover, the joy, security, and sense of accomplishment it provides to young swimmers cannot be underestimated.
Saving Franklin Pool requires immediate action. We urge Yakima's city council to reconsider its budget allocation. Rather than cutting funding to close the pool, we propose identifying alternative funding options or reallocating resources to preserve this essential community institution, perhaps create a community funded pool. Engaging local businesses, exploring partnerships, or organizing community fundraisers could also alleviate financial challenges.
Sign this petition to ensure the continued operation of Franklin Pool. Stand with us in safeguarding a space that fosters health, happiness, and unity in Yakima. Together, let's advocate for the future of our community and the well-being of all its members.
