The Issue

The number 20 bus service is more than just a means of transportation for the residents of knowle village .  funtley; and hillpark road and Thames drive it is an essential lifeline that connects us to work, education, and healthcare. For many of us, including myself, the impending cancellation in August/September 2025 comes as a daunting reality that will severely impact daily life. Living in Knowle Village, where taxi fares to Fareham Town Centre exceed £11 one way, this bus service is indispensable.

For elderly residents, the number 20 bus is their only affordable way to stay independent, to make vital trips for groceries or doctor visits. Without it, many will be isolated. For students, it's the link to education, providing a reliable way to reach schools and colleges, helping them to pursue their futures. Working professionals rely on this service for their daily commutes, ensuring they can reach their workplaces on time without the crippling costs of alternative transportation.

The decision to stop this service will have profound effects not only on individual lives but on the community as a whole. Approximately 60% of our local population use public transport, with the number 20 being a primary route for thousands. According to the local council's last public transport review, over 1,500 daily passengers are served by this route, more than justifying its necessity.

What can be done? We urge the local council and the public transport authority to reconsider this decision. Options such as reducing frequency rather than a total cut, seeking supplemental funding from regional grants, or community partnerships can maintain this critical route.

Our community depends on the continued operation of the number 20 bus service. Losing it would mean increased transport costs, reduced accessibility to essential services, and greater isolation for many. Together, we can advocate for a solution that keeps our community connected. Let’s work to keep Fareham moving forward.
