Save Cromwell Park North in Malabar from destructive development - relocate the pump park

The issue

Our community treasures historic Cromwell Park North, a rare green haven amidst the sprawl of the ever-expanding city. It offers residents a vital refuge from city clamour and overdevelopment, providing a public sanctuary for biodiversity, mental wellbeing and low-impact recreation, like walking, yoga, tai chi, frisbee golf and youth group activities.  For wildlife, it's an essential habitat corridor linking two National Parks and supporting protected species.

Now, this cherished space is under threat. Randwick Council plans to carve out part of the park to build a concrete bike pump track, reducing its size and replacing mature trees and natural habitat with increased traffic, noise and a single-use facility that benefits only a few. Due to its location, there are also site restrictions from Sydney Water, so the original large scale concept design for the pump park has been significantly reduced in size.

Relocating the pump park to a more suitable location would allow Council to deliver their project without reducing the original planned pump park design, and without damaging Cromwell Park North. This simple change would preserve the park's full size, protect its biodiversity, and keep it as a peaceful retreat for the whole community.

Rather than safeguarding our park for the benefit of all residents and future generations, Randwick Council is choosing unnecessary development that erases part of a unique community asset forever.                   The costs - economic and environmental - will be paid by us, the residents, while the loss of this green space will be irreversible.

This land is part of our shared heritage and must remain a sanctuary for nature, recreation and community life. There are many more suitable locations for a larger scale pump park and bike track that better meet the needs of the whole community and do not involve sacrificing this vital green corridor.

This petition is a call to everyone who values the preservation of public parkland: let's protect Cromwell Park North in its entirety. Tell Randwick Council to relocate the pump park and keep this green space whole.

Please act now - once it's gone, it's gone forever.
