Save Crewe's art deco swimming baths
The Issue
Crewe's Art Deco Swimming Baths stand as one of the last remaining examples of this type of architecture in the United Kingdom. My grandmother and great uncle had the privilege of attending the baths’ grand opening in 1937, a moment that marked the inception of a beautiful piece of history. I, too, recall the splendour of these baths in the 1970s, which remained a cherished jewel of Crewe, a town that has already seen most of its quality architecture sadly disappear.
The impending plan to spend £1.3 million to demolish this architectural gem instead of opting for its restoration is both heartbreaking and short-sighted. Our community stands at a crossroad to decide if we want to protect our history or let it be erased.
Not only do the baths hold sentimental value, but they also represent a rare and tangible link to our past. Art Deco architecture, noted for its elegance and innovative design, is a collective heritage we cannot afford to lose. Many towns across the UK have witnessed the loss of such historical structures only to later regret it.
Instead of demolishing, we must consider an alternative: restoration. By investing in restoration rather than destruction, we can preserve the integrity of our town's history. Not only will this honour our past, but it can also provide a renewed space for community activities, tourism, and education about the architectural era that shaped much of our society.
Imagine rejuvenating the community spirit by revamping these baths into a multi-use facility that continues to serve as a significant cultural hub. By reaching out to conservation experts and exploring potential funding avenues, such as heritage grants, we could breathe new life into this neglected structure.
Join me in urging the local council and stakeholders to reconsider the plans and to protect this irreplaceable piece of history. By signing this petition, you are not just defending a building but advocating for the preservation of our shared heritage. Let's ensure that future generations can enjoy and learn from our past. Please sign this petition to save Crewe's Art Deco Swimming Baths. Together, we can make a difference.
