Save Bollington Library: A Vital Community Resource at Risk

Cheshire East Council is planning to launch a consultation to close a quarter of its libraries, including Bollington's, and slash the opening hours of 6 more.

Bollington library has already had its opening hours cut, and a reduction in funding for new books. This is the third attempt at cuts in 18 months. Bollington library lends more books to children per capita than any other Cheshire East library. New BookTrust research finds that families overwhelmingly see reading with their child as important - but need more support to make it happen.

We say enough is enough, and urge Cheshire East Council to reconsider the proposed closure of Bollington Library. This treasured institution is far more than a building filled with books; it is a lifeline for many in our community, providing essential services and fostering connections that enhance the quality of life for over 8,000 residents.

What is at stake?

Our library gives access to books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks and more which can be borrowed from across the entire county of Cheshire and beyond. The library offers access to the internet and computer lessons for beginners. As a Cheshire East resource, it ensures we are connected to other council services.

Additionally, Bollington Library is a crucial gathering place that combats isolation by connecting people of all ages. From baby groups that support new parents to providing older adults with access to technology and social interaction, the library is a beacon of community spirit. Removing this space would sever these vital connections, leaving thousands of regular users without a safe, welcoming place to gather and grow.

Cheshire East Council acknowledge the importance of their libraries. On their website they say "Our libraries are at the heart of the community and we want them to be accessible to everyone. For people with dementia, library visits and other library services can make a huge contribution to wellbeing. Our staff are trained in dementia awareness and will do everything they can to help." That they would consider closing any of their libraries seems at odds with their values.

Bollington Library is not an underused resource. Its membership is high and growing, with 40% of Bollington's population registered as members in June 2023, a number that is likely approaching 50% today. If you visit the library on a Saturday morning, it is a hive of activity. It is clearly loved by children, adults and the librarians who go above and beyond to make the library the community hub that it is.

So what now?

Cheshire East Council is planning to consult the public on proposals to close Bollington Library with effect from January 1 2025.

The proposals are expected to be put before the Council's Environment and Communities Committee on July 18th 2024 (previously July 25th).

The people of Bollington urge the council to keep Bollington library open, run by its professional, experienced staff and with its current opening hours, so it can continue to provide us with the superb service we appreciate so much.

Join us in our campaign to save Bollington Library. Together, we can ensure that Bollington Library remains a cornerstone of our community for generations to come.
