Keep Blackwater Creek Elementary Gr K -7 Support learning for rural students!
The Issue
Blackwater Creek Elementary serves students in a 2 room schoolhouse located in Devine. Though it was originally k-7 until the 60s then reduced to K-3, over the years due to low enrolment and demand from local families to stay - kids were able to continue on in grades and now Blackwater Creek Elementary has returned to its roots and is proudly educating k - gr 7.
The common misconception in our area is that the school in Pemberton (signal hill) is overflowing in terms of student population. Not unreasonable as the population growth in our little town is growing rapidly. However thats not the case and the school is not full. But our little school is busting at the seems! Not physically as we have the space to accommodate more kids but not with only one teacher. Also not surprising as more and more people are moving outside of the cities to rural communities.
We need a second teacher to help with increased enrolment and help fulfill demand from the local population to keep this school thriving.
The sea to sky school district staff are recommending an enrolment cap of 20 students at Blackwater Creek Elementary and enroll K-3 students for next year which would result in 14 students being transferred from their school. They must now look forward to 2+ hrs on the bus daily travel to Pemberton. We also feel strongly that this decision will ultimately lead to the schools closing as the numbers at that restricted grade level are not sustainable long term.
The PAC Council would greatly appreciate your support in our fight to show the school district that this school is financially viable giving the funding allocated, the student population demands it, and the community rallies to keep rural education opportunities available!
