Sanitarium STOP putting vending machines in our schools
The issue
This petition was set up to provide a voice for parents, teachers, principals and others to say NO!
NO to products like Sanitarium Up & Go being provided in vending machines in our schools.
Recently released World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines on added sugar recommend that adults consume no more than 10% of their total energy intake from added sugar - this is about 6 tsps of sugar a day for a women and 9 tsps a day for a man. For children it is roughly 3 tsps. Each Up & Go (serving size 350ml) contains 26.6g of sugar - that is more than 6.5 tsps, of which 4.7 tsps are added sugar.
Sanitarium says: "We believe all children should have a nutritious start to their day and access to healthy food throughout the day. We will commit to the mission of the school by offering free vending machines. You pay nothing – it's risk free."
Risk free for who? Certainly not our children. When it packs a punch at 4.7 tsps of added sugar it certainly does not provide a balanced nutritious start to the day or a health food throughout the day for children. The recommendations from WHO are the result of overwhelming scientific evidence now available on added sugar and its long term effects - diabetes, heart disease, obesity, to name but a few.
Sugar is but one concerning ingredient in Up and Go. There are more. For example in a Chocolate Up & Go there is also vegetable oils, soy and fructose; each of which has its own unique issues. Carrageenan (407) and sodium carboxy-methylcelluose (466) have been used as stabilisers/thickeners and have both been linked to cancer and tumours in animals and have been shown to cause gastrointestinal problems (Chemical Maze). Number 322 is potassium citrate which can cause problems for people who have MSG sensitivities. (Thanks to Primal Life www.Facebook.com/PrimalLifeNZ for the above info.)
The concept of a vending machine also teaches our children to reach for convenience and processed food over real food, this is surely not a habit we want our children to grow up with. It also means there can only be limited or no monitoring by parents; or even the school for that fact.
Sanitarium claim this is 'A partnership with benefits.' There are no benefits for our children's health.
