Safety Improvements on Loseth Drive

The Issue

The City of Kelowna must immediately allocate sufficient funding for a comprehensive safety study on Loseth Drive.

Background:

  • The speed of vehicles is becoming increasingly dangerous on Loseth Drive
  • Many children cross Loseth Drive at every cross street along the corridor to get to, and from, Black Mountain Elementary
  • There are several preschools and after-school care programs in the neighbourhood
  • There are no traffic calming measures whatsoever, such as speed bumps or 4-way stops
  • There are no crosswalks or flashing crosswalks,
  • There are no parking restrictions along Loseth Drive to increase the visibility of oncoming, fast-moving vehicles.
  • For years, residents have been formally creating service requests to document their close calls, and grave concerns. The city has ignored this issue and taken no action to address the risk.
  • To a recent service request Jasen Sackmann, Traffic Technician acknowledged that the City had noted the concern and risk. Still, funding is tentative. "due to the ongoing development to the north leading to increased traffic /speed downstream and existing challenging road geometry. ....therefore, the City is tentatively planning to perform a comprehensive safety study for the Loseth Drive corridor (subject to budget approval).
