Safety 1st! Put School Keep Clear ZigZag lines outside Bourne Westfield pedestrian gate and a One Way System.
The Issue
We want School Keep Clear Zig Zags and One Way System outside Bourne Westfield Primary School Pedestrian gate on Kingsley Avenue. The School Keep Clear ZigZags to start at the corner of Godiva Crescent continuing past the school gate for 3 metres, allowing space for children and families to cross safely and be safe entering the school. The One Way System to go down Leofric Avenue towards Saxon Way and up Kingsley Avenue to Westbourne Park.
This is a very dangerous corner, junction and road for pedestrians. Cars park all along Kingsley Ave and round the corner to Godiva Crescent junction. Others block the road whilst dropping off children, causing dangerous driving when faced with cars travelling in the other direction, including driving on the pavements.
Why do we want this? "This morning as I walked round Kingsley Avenue corner with 2 small boys, I was confronted with a car driving down the pavement towards us, caused by another car blocking the whole road to drop off children. Cars were parked all along the road making it impossible for the cars to drive up and down the road". What if my child had decided to run ahead of me this morning round the corner? Would the cars have noticed? Will we wait until a child is hurt or killed before acting to put safety first? This type of incident has happened many times, with many near misses. We need to act now before a child gets seriously hurt. The simple solution is to have No Stopping Zig Zags from Godiva Crescent to past the school gate and a One Way system. This would clear the parked cars around the corner, allow cars to drive safely down the road without needing to mount the pavements. More importantly, it would give children the space needed to cross safely. Remember the green cross code- don't cross between parked cars.
This is not the first incident of dangerous, inconsiderate driving on this road Let's make it the last! Let's put Children's safety first before drivers convenience and before a child is seriously hurt or killed.
