Review all planning permission & permitted road blockages for construction on Isle of Dogs
The Issue
A corrupt mayor is ousted, but most of the planning permissions of his regime stand. Planning permission is given indiscriminately without a corresponding plan for basic infrastructure like schools and GP surgeries. Roads, passages and footpaths are closed indiscriminately and dangerously for years at a time. Some examples.
City Pride: 75 storey building given planning permission with footpaths on 2 roads given for 4 years given to aid the construction. Footprint of the building is so small that the mandatory affordable housing has to be on the other side of the island, thus defeating the spirit of the law altogether. Planning permission was first rejected, then accepted despite nothing changing in the plans. They also got away without compensating nearby residents on loss of light under the right to light act.
Preston Road: "1,400+ residents were terribly affected by the closure of the Lovegrove path through Wood Wharf construction. Canary Wharf Group, who run that particular construction site have decided to close this path for at least 3-4 years. Complaining directly to Canary Wharf Group, reaching out to local Councillors, the Mayor of LBTH and sent planning enforcement notices to the Council. Still not able to keep our path open but we did get media coverage by reaching out local journalists (raising pressure on CWG) and have gotten CWG to provide residents with a shuttle bus during rush hour and they will be building a pontoon to facilitate access to Canary Wharf again (their closure of the path has increased the journey to approximately 20 mins / 1 mile to get to the jubilee). The Council have not responded to a single planning enforcement notice as far as I'm aware nor to the Members Enquiries submitted by the Councillors. Its pretty despicable how far on the priority list residents have fallen in favor of greedy developers on the IOD."
Wardian, Marsh Wall: You can no longer walk right from the bridge from Canary Wharf for FOUR years. This is due to another planned "development" (Arrowsmith or something) That leaves the ridiculously narrow, for the rest of it is chained off, passageway that leads to the hotel. Our main support has been Councillor Andrew Wood. This was the response he got when he raised the issue with the council. "It is the Ballymore Wardian development aka Arrowhead Quay. I & others objected to the development at the planning committee when this was submitted in November 2014. We pointed out that Tower Hamlets Council planning policy did not allow for buildings to built above the dockside pedestrian walk but should step back from the water but this had no impact. Last week I walked around the area and pointed out the closure to Tower Hamlets Council officers and how it made the whole journey more dangerous for pedestrians but TH Council planning have already agreed to the foot path closure on safety grounds. This issue has been raised repeatedly with the Council, how you can ensure pedestrian safety in an area with so many construction sites but with no formal answer yet. The problem is that developers are saying it is unsafe to walk through or next to a construction site but that forces pedestrians onto roads or other routes which maybe more dangerous."
Westferry Printworks/ Docklands Sailing Centre - From The Wharf Feb 2016: Redevelopment plans for Westferry Printworks could potentially “devastate” the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre (DSWC). Under current plans , four residential blocks will be built on the edge of Millwall Outer Dock, which the club uses for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. DSWC chairman Martin Younge has raised concerns over the positioning of these blocks, saying they would seriously disrupt the wind that sailing boats use to launch. He said: “The effect of the buildings would be to whip the wind around and render it difficult to board and get sailing – that’s the problem. “We think if the plans were to go ahead, our charitable operation would cease to exist. It’s an existential threat to community sailing, but we’re working on it." An environmental statement commissioned by the project’s developer London and Regional Properties admits the buildings would have an “adverse and significant” effect on the wind at the north west of the dock - the boats’ launch site.
There are more... we are tired. Someone needs to take a good look at this borough. See how deep the corruption runs. Tell us why no one listens to us. And tell us what to do to be heard.
