Sack Mark Scott, Stop Antisemitism at USYD
The issue
University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Mark Scott says Jewish students will have to tough out being “uncomfortable” in the face of anti-Israel slogans. He has described protests calling "From the River to the Sea" and encouraging children to chant "Intifada" as peaceful.
Scott endangers the health, livelihood, and education of peaceful Israeli and Palestinian students as well as many thousands of others by his reckless neglect of his own student charter and the values it represents.
The vice-president of the Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS), Zac Morris, said he had met with the University of Sydney on multiple occasions and was disheartened by their response to growing concerns from Jewish staff and students. “Students are afraid to go to class, they’re missing lectures and tutorials,” he said. “They’re being filmed, followed, intimidated.”
A Jewish USYD Student said to Professor Catharine Lumby "I was keeping it together. But when I came onto campus this afternoon, I had to walk through a student rally where they were not only calling for Israel to be abolished but calling Jews genocidal. All Jews? Don’t they know anything about history?”
A University of Sydney professor Sujatha Fernandes has told first-year students that Hamas’ mass rape and sexual violence on October 7 were “fake news” and a “hoax” peddled by the media, and that Israel had engaged in “ethnic cleansing” propped up by Western governments who had “repressed domestic dissent”.
Antisemitism has no place in Australia, a nation built on principles of equality, respect, and multiculturalism. Our country's rich cultural tapestry is woven from the diverse backgrounds of its people, and discrimination in any form undermines the very fabric of our society. Antisemitism, with its roots in prejudice and ignorance, not only harms individuals but also erodes the inclusive values that Australians hold dear. It threatens the safety, dignity, and well-being of Jewish communities, and contradicts our commitment to ensuring that everyone can live and learn in an environment free from fear and hostility. By standing against antisemitism, we uphold the integrity of our national ethos, fostering a society where mutual respect and understanding flourish.
These vicious riots and hate speech have no place on our campuses. Antisemitism ends today.
