Support Canada's Only Science Communication Master's Degree Before it gets Cut

The Issue

In light of the news of Laurentian University’s insolvency, it is in the process of examining and restructuring all facets of the institution. Laurentian has indicated it wishes to keep offering high-quality education to its students. The Science Communication Masters Degree that they offer is high quality and is a lucrative asset that should remain into the future.

The Nation and The World need more Science Communicators. It is a vastly under-represented field at the Master's level. These individuals are communication leaders that are the best suited for mediating and advising in places where other sectors converge with science: from business to public policy, to education, to humanitarian efforts, and more.

Countless global affairs could benefit from science communication professionals. Consider Covid-19 as an example where a science communicator could be relied upon to disseminate information to an audience in the best way that they will understand. Climate change is another example where science communicators would have the credentials and training to disseminate and advise the stakeholders involved which may include policymakers, businesspeople, the public, etc.

Laurentian is special in that it is the only University to offer such a program in Canada, and is 1 of 5 in the entire world.

Even among that group, Laurentian offers a unique science ecosystem. Science North science center, a hub for grassroots scientific learning, as well as SNOlab, one of the world’s only dedicated dark matter research centers, are right on Laurentian’s doorstep. It would be illogical and detrimental to disrupt this ecosystem.

Maintaining unique programs like this is important to building a breadth of highly skilled professionals allowing Canada to adapt effectively to today's and tomorrow's complex problems.

By signing this petition, you signal to the University Senate, restructuring personnel, decision-makers, and supporting political & financial entities, that the Science Communication Master’s Degree should NOT be cut from its program offerings.
