FL Students Want FL Govt to Ban the Plastic Bottles and Bags

The Issue

Plastic bottles and bags (especially the single-use ones from grocery stores that cannot be recycled) are lining our roadways, shores, and have already created massive "Plastic Islands" in the Pacific Ocean -- killing and harming wildlife.  But, the worse problem now is the exponentially growing amount of micro-plastic debris (see Nationalgeographic.com) in the North Pacific.  We do not even know the extent of the damage on the ocean's ecosystem, but, University of Santa Cruz, CA has already studied the recent toll that micro-plastic debris has taken on the sea mammals of Monterey Bay -- like the Seals who cannot seem to use their normal filtration process to successfully feed nourishment to their growing fetuses.  Their miscarriage rate is unprecedented.

Each day, we throw away about 300 million tons of petroleum-based plastic bottles, bags, utensils, packaging and other so-called disposable items. Sadly, these disposable plastics persist in the environment and the largest percent of it travels throughout the global food web forever.  We need to be the societal change that can transform this planet to a modern, caring, thriving one.  There is no one else to do it for us!
