Rachel Hampton started this petition to Senator Richard Blumenthal and

My name is Rachel and I am a Salon owner and hairdresser in the state of CT. I want to start out by saying that I completely understand why people so badly want salon to reopen. People want to look and feel normal to help get through this tough time that is anything but normal. Its typical human behavior that when we feel down, or drab that we treat ourselves to a haircut or a fresh manicure or even a tan to give ourselves the pick me up we desire! Its been about 2 months since anyone has had any of these services, so i'm sure that everyone is feeling this way! Myself included! I would LOVE more than anything to reopen my salon and return to work and give people this much needed much desired pick me up, Its why I am a hairdresser! Its what I love to do! But I also feel that in these scary times there is more that we should be considering. As hairdressers we cannot "social distance" in a way that many other businesses can. Hospitals are having a hard time finding enough PPE to adequately supply their employees, how are we supposed to aquire it if they can't? We have to work in direct contact with our client to provide their services, all the while putting ourselves and even other clients at risk! There is no six feet rule for us!If I am exposed at work, I also then risk infecting my family as well. The state of CT has put hair salons and even nail salons in the tier one category for an opening of May 20. But is this really safe? If restaurants can open for outdoor seating only, museums and zoos for outdoor activities only, and campground and biking trails are considered tier one then how is it safe for myself and my staff to be indoors in direct contact with little protocols to actually protect ourselves? If its not safe for Dentists, or tattoo parlors, or even Courthouses and jails to fully reopen then how is it safe for the beauty industry? Governor Lamont in his recent news briefing was asked about operating jails at normal capacity and said himself "I believe its too soon". So how is it not too soon for an industry that sees multiple clients a day, some in our chairs for multiple hours at a time even, to reopen? I would like to urge everyone to really think about this! Is a haircut really necessary, even more so then a teeth cleaning or even getting a cavity drilled? My personal appointments for these services were canceled! I would like to urge our state officials to really rethink and reconsider reopening hair salons and the risks that come with it! We are not test dummies we are people and we deserve to be treated as such! And lastly I would like to urge hairdressers, even nail techs that feel as strongly as I do to stand with me in this fight! We are people to and if its not safe for other close contact business to reopen, its not safe for us either! We ALL want to get back to work, we ALL want to get out of quarantine and get back to life, but please lets weather this storm together and do so safely!
