The Issue

We recently lost a dear friend who will remain anonymous, a devastating loss that might have been prevented if they had access to the support they needed. This tragedy is not an isolated incident. Many in the LGBTQIA+ community face mental health challenges that require specialized support. Yet, shockingly, the recent legislation in the U.S. removed the dedicated LGBTQIA+ offshoot of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

This decision has serious implications. A CDC report highlights that LGBTQIA+ youth seriously contemplate suicide at a rate almost three times higher than heterosexual youth. The Trevor Project's National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health further reveals that 45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, with 14% actually attempting it. Specialized crisis support could literally mean the difference between life and death for these individuals.

The removal of the LGBTQIA+ line from the 988 service strips away a crucial lifeline tailored to those who need understanding and support without judgment. It's imperative that these individuals feel heard, understood, and valued. Rescinding this lifeline ignores their cries for help and puts countless lives at risk.

We cannot stand by as our community suffers. We demand the immediate reinstatement of the LGBTQIA+ support line under 988. This is not just a plea—it’s a duty to protect and save lives.

We call on lawmakers and mental health agencies to take action. Reinstate the LGBTQIA+ offshoot of 988 now! Sign this petition and let your voice be the one that protects others from becoming another tragic statistic. Act now before it's too late.
