Revoke the Boy Scouts of America's congressional charter

La causa

Growing up, I remember the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) as the organization for character-building and leadership for young boys across the nation. It was an institution synonymous with trust, integrity, and noble values. But the BSA today (now Scouting America) is a shadow of its former self. It pains me to acknowledge that the organization has faced a deeply concerning sexual-abuse scandal over recent years, compromising the safety and well-being of countless young scouts.

The BSA has faced thousands of sexual-abuse claims, revealing a systemic problem that dates back decades. According to the organization’s own bankruptcy filings, more than 90,000 survivors came forward to seek compensation. This is not an issue that can be brushed aside or solved through surface-level reforms. This is an endemic failure that requires a fundamental shift to address and prevent further tragedies.

Furthermore, the program that once fostered development, outdoor skills, and community engagement is no longer what it was 109 years ago. With the recent rebranding to Scouting America, many believe the organization has drifted far from the core mission and values that Congress originally recognized when granting the federal charter. This raises a serious question about whether the institution, in its current form, still deserves the symbolic endorsement and trust that a Congressional charter represents.

Revoking the charter would not mean the end of the organization. Instead, it would serve as a necessary wake-up call. It would push Scouting America to overhaul its policies, implement stronger and more transparent child-protection measures, and take real steps toward rebuilding public trust. Independent audits, open reporting, and genuine support for survivors must be the foundation of that transformation.

At the same time, we must encourage and uplift youth organizations that offer leadership development and community service while maintaining rigorous safety standards and accountability. Our children deserve programs that uphold the values they promise.

Urging Congress to revoke the Boy Scouts of America’s Congressional charter is an act not just for change, but for justice and prevention. Sign this petition today, and let’s demand accountability, reform, and a safer future for every child.
