Revise uniform policy at St Stephens School
The issue
I'm a student at St Stephens School and I'm writing this petition because I believe the current uniform policy is unfair and financially burdensome. The mandatory school blazer costs nearly $200, which is more than many families can afford, and I'm facing detentions simply because I can't afford it.
Furthermore, I've been penalized for expressing myself through a slight tint of blue in my hair and for wearing makeup due to personal insecurities. It's frustrating to know that teachers have the freedom to dress and wear makeup as they please, while students are punished for small expressions of individuality. Additionally, I've received detentions for wearing the wrong socks and am only allowed a maximum of two piercings, even though school socks cost around $30.
What's concerning is that if a student receives three detentions, they face suspension. This system is unreasonable and punitive, especially since uniform violations are not indicative of a student's academic performance or behavior. Suspension for something as minor as incorrect socks or affordable alternatives is simply unjust.
I propose that St Stephens School re-evaluates its uniform policy to make it more inclusive and affordable for all students. For instance, the school could permit affordable alternatives to the current uniform options, allow students to have a say in their personal appearance, and introduce a more lenient approach towards minor uniform infractions.
By signing this petition, you're supporting a fairer educational environment where students are not punished for their financial circumstances and personal expression. Please sign and help bring about this necessary change at St Stephens School.
