Revise the UK council tax banding system

Revise the UK council tax banding system

The Issue

I currently live in a large 4 bed semi-detached house and am paying council tax band C. As I am downsizing to a new build, 3-bedroom semi-detached house, I was shocked to learn that my council tax band will now be E. Meanwhile, a friend of mine, moving into a similarly sized 4-bedroom house in the same area, will be paying Band B. Both properties have identical market values, yet the difference in council tax amounts to a staggering £1,145.86 per annum. This significant disparity impacts my living standards, and surely affects countless other families across the UK.

The current banding system is clearly not fit for purpose. It no longer reflects the true value or size of properties in today's housing market. The way in which the bands are allocated needs immediate re-evaluation. Our local governments must take action to ensure that tax bands are fairly and accurately assigned to reflect the true value and size of properties, rather than outdated assessments.

Evidence shows that many families face similar issues across the country, making the need for reform undeniable. According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, housing costs have risen dramatically in recent years, yet the council tax system remains unchanged since its introduction in 1991.

We need a system that is transparent, fair, and accountable. The government must commission a comprehensive review of the current banding system, taking into account current property values and regional differences. By utilizing up-to-date data and economic conditions, we can create a council tax system that is equitable for all.

Please sign this petition to urge the UK government to undertake an urgent review and reform of the council tax banding system. Together, we can demand a fairer system that accurately reflects our economic realities and eases the financial burden on families across the nation.
