The Issue

For the past four years, I have eagerly anticipated the celebration of Matric Celebration Week, a tradition that has defined the essence of being a boarder at our school here in Parktown, Johannesburg. It's more than just a week of fun, it's a time to bond, to let loose before the final stretch of matric, and to bid a heartfelt farewell to our years of boarding school. But this year, those hopes have been dampened by the imposition of strict and non-inclusive restrictions on Silly Week, with no prior consultation with us, the students who cherish this tradition dearly.

Silly Week has always been a unifying event, celebrated with joy and mutual respect, and it holds no malice. Being excluded from the decision-making process strips away its essence and undermines the Boarders' camaraderie and spirit. Instead of being trusted and guided through our planned celebrations, we find ourselves bound by rules that feel more punitive than protective.

The restrictions imposed disregard our traditions and hinder our ability to celebrate in a way that has been both meaningful and memorable for generations. The decisions seem out of touch with the spirit of Silly Week, erasing the uniqueness of our experiences as boarders. We, the students, should be allowed the opportunity to celebrate responsibly and with guidance.

This petition calls on the school leadership to revise the current restrictions on Silly Week. We propose establishing a dialogue with student boarders to develop guidelines that maintain safety without stifling our sense of unity and celebration. To be truly heard. Our goal isn't to evade rules, but rather to ensure they reflect our spirit and traditions.

By signing this petition, you advocate for the voices of boarders to be heard and respected. Let us work together towards a ‘Silly’ Week that remains joyous and true to its roots. Help us preserve the essence of what we have looked forward to for so long. Sign this petition and stand with us in supporting a more inclusive and balanced approach to our beloved Silly Week.
