Revise Insurance Policies to Cover Post-weight Loss Skin Removal

The Issue

My name is a testament of determination, discipline, and commitment. As a bariatric patient, I have undertaken a rigorous journey and managed to lose over 135 lbs and maintain this weight loss for a decade. However, the resulting excess skin continues to burden me with a sense of shame and embarrassment. Sleeveless clothes in summer or any attire that reveals the hanging skin, becomes a source of humiliation rather than a symbol of achieved health.

Current insurance policies label the removal of this excess skin as "not medically necessary,'' neglecting the mental health implications it carries. Many with similar stories suffer from body dysmorphia, low self-esteem, and social alienation, yet their calls for change fall on deaf ears. It's time to recognize that the journey towards health doesn't simply end with weight loss.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that in 2019 alone, 61,000 contouring procedures after massive weight loss were carried out, showing a 7% rise from the previous year. The increase signifies not only the demand but the necessity of these procedures in making the weight-loss journey a complete success.

Therefore, we call upon all insurance companies to revise their policies, removing the "medical necessity" clause for skin removal after extensive weight loss. Instead, let's make it a standard coverage, acknowledging the mental importance alongside the physical effort in restoring health.

If you believe in the fight against body dysmorphia, in the real stories of regained health, dignity and confidence, please join me in this cause. Sign this petition and help tip the scales towards a fair recognition of all aspects of the weight loss journey.
