Revise Dog Ban to Allow Leashed Dogs on East Riding Beaches

Revise Dog Ban to Allow Leashed Dogs on East Riding Beaches
The Issue
Dog ownership in the East Riding of Yorkshire is a cherished part of many residents’ lives, bringing joy, companionship, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. However, a local public space protection order currently restricts dogs from certain areas entirely, affecting pet owners who simply wish to enjoy the beach with their furry companions.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council's existing dog ban not only limits residents' enjoyment of public spaces but also puts undue pressure on designated areas where dogs are allowed, leading to overcrowding and potential environmental degradation due to concentrated use.
Allowing dogs in these public areas on leashes can strike a balance between maintaining public hygiene and providing a fulfilling environment for dog walkers and people who simply want to be with their dogs on the beach near amenity’s and with family.
Leashed dogs ensure control and safety, significantly reducing risks of unwanted behaviour and interference with other visitors, promotes tourism and boosts the local economy.
It's important to consider that dogs play a vital role in fostering community interaction, reducing stress and anxiety, and encouraging exercise. By modifying the ban to allow leashed dogs or reducing the ban period to high season, we affirm our commitment to an inclusive community that respects both dog owners and other citizens’ enjoyment of shared public spaces.
We urge the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to amend their current order to permit dogs on leashes on beaches or reduce the ban period to high season/school holidays only. This change would reflect a balanced approach, accommodating all community members and ensuring that public spaces remain welcoming and accessible.
