A Call for Fairer Fines, Greater Transparency and Safer Roads

I have lived in Victoria for most of my life, and every day I am disheartened by the condition of many of our roads despite the high traffic infringement fees imposed on Victorian motorists.

As a working individual, I budget carefully to meet my financial responsibilities, but these increasingly expensive fines can place significant financial pressure on individuals and families. This is not simply about money—it is about safety, efficiency and fairness for all Victorians.

Victoria's roads are essential to our daily lives. We rely on them to commute to work, take our children to school, and transport goods and services. Yet many communities continue to experience potholes, deteriorating surfaces, inadequate signage, poor lighting, congestion and other road safety concerns.

There appears to be a significant disconnect between the high cost of traffic infringement penalties and the condition of road infrastructure experienced by many Victorians. Motorists should be held accountable for unsafe driving, but penalties should also be fair, proportionate and accompanied by meaningful investment in road safety.

We are calling on the Victorian Government to:
- Review the current level of traffic infringement fees and consider reducing excessive penalties.
- Provide greater transparency about how infringement revenue is collected and allocated.
- Increase investment in road repairs, pothole maintenance, lighting and signage.
- Prioritise improvements to known accident-prone locations.
- Improve traffic management systems and road design to reduce congestion and accidents.
- Consider greater financial hardship provisions for people who genuinely cannot afford high infringement fees.
- Ensure that Victorian motorists can see tangible improvements in road safety and infrastructure.
- Reducing excessive penalties while redirecting appropriate funding toward essential road infrastructure could improve safety, efficiency and public confidence.

This campaign is not about avoiding responsibility for traffic offences. Drivers should follow the law and be accountable for dangerous behaviour. However, the system should also be fair, transparent and focused on improving road safety—not simply imposing increasingly high financial penalties.

I am asking the Victorian Government to listen to the concerns of Victorian motorists and undertake a comprehensive review of traffic infringement fees, revenue allocation and road infrastructure investment.
