The Issue

On June 8th, students across the country sat for the AQA GCSE Further Maths Level 2 paper 1 non-calculator exam. This was a day filled with anxiety and apprehension. As a student myself, alongside my peers, we faced an unexpected challenge. The questions presented in the exam were disproportionately difficult, surpassing the usual rigor students anticipate and prepare for.

The AQA GCSE Further Maths exam is intended to assess a student's understanding of mathematics at a level that is demanding but fair. However, this particular exam deviated from this standard. Many of us, who have consistently performed well in practice exams and mock tests, were left bewildered and disheartened. We believe the level of difficulty exceeded what is reasonable, and does not accurately reflect the abilities and knowledge base of the average student preparing for a Level 2 Further Maths qualification.

AQA has always been committed to providing fair and balanced assessments that truly gauge student understanding. Yet, many questions on this exam were not only intricate but also included elements which were not aligned with the syllabus, causing undue stress to countless students.

Numerous students have expressed their concerns, noting that even top-performing pupils struggled to complete the test or felt defeated by problems that seemed to go beyond the depth of what had been extensively taught. Such an experience could potentially hamper a student’s progress and diminish their interest in pursuing further education in fields requiring strong mathematical capabilities.

We call upon AQA to undertake a thorough review of the June 8th Further Maths exam. This review should aim to assess whether the exam content was suitable and fair, ensuring that all assessments in the future remain within a scope that is appropriate and reflects the curriculum faithfully.

It is crucial for educational bodies to maintain the trust of their students by ensuring all exams are fair assessments of the taught syllabus. We hope AQA will act swiftly and decisively to address this issue, guaranteeing a just outcome for all affected students.

Please support our cause by signing this petition to urge an official review of the June 8th Further Maths exam. Together, we can strive for fairness in our educational assessments.
