The Issue

Living in a community close to the beautiful Spanish Banks in Vancouver, I have cherished countless memories of family outings, peaceful walks with my dogs, and relaxing beach days. For many of us, Spanish Banks isn't just a beach—it's a pivotal part of our lives and community fabric.

Recently, the spike in parking fees at Spanish Banks has become a pressing issue. Originally, the parking here was free, allowing everyone to access the beach without financial burden. A few years ago, a nominal fee of $1.50 per hour was introduced, and even then, it was manageable. But the sudden increase to $4.75 per hour will sadly make it unaffordable for many regular visitors like myself, who frequent the beach several times a week, especially during the summer.

This drastic price hike excludes a significant portion of our community, undermining the essence of Spanish Banks as a public space for all. Families who enjoyed a day out, elderly couples who walked the serene beach, individuals seeking solace with nature—all face a financial barrier to what should be freely accessible.

The increased fee also raises questions about economic fairness and accessibility. Public spaces should not be restricted by financial constraints, especially during challenging economic times when many look to nature for respite and recreation.

I urge the local authorities to review the recent parking fee increase at Spanish Banks. It’s essential to strike a balance where maintenance costs are covered while keeping this cherished beach accessible to everyone in the community.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for fair and accessible public spaces in Vancouver, ensuring Spanish Banks remains an inviting retreat for all. Let's keep our beaches open to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Please sign and help restore Spanish Banks as a welcoming community haven.
