Review of University of Notre Dame's policy in AI detection and appeal process
The issue
This petition has been created to support students of the University of Notre Dame who have been falsely or unfairly affected by Turnitin's AI detection tool. This petition's aim is to raise awareness to Administration regarding the effect on students who have been accused of Academic Integrity breach, the limitations this creates for students under specific circumstances and the barriers students face in the appeal process. Circumstances in which this AI detection model has affected people include, but are not limited to:
- International students, or ESL students who rely on assistance for spelling, grammar or punctuation.
- Students with learning disorders (e.g. dyslexia) who rely on learning tools such as Grammarly for spell check.
- Students who have been falsely flagged for AI on original work and have accelerated semesters, meaning the appeal process for a flagged assignment can take up to 6 weeks (10 business days to appeal, 20 business days of appeal review) out of an 8 (or 10) week semester.
- Students who do not support the added responsibility of saving extra material/ drafts as "evidence" of original work, implying students flagged by this model as using AI are guilty until proven otherwise.
- Faculty in charge of meeting with a high volume of students who have flagged work. This can be challenging during times of high workload at various points of the academic semester, and emails of concern by students can (and have) been missed following a release of grades.
Outcomes of this petition hopes to reach a thorough review of Turnitin's efficacy and detection, reform in Academic Integrity policy whereby transparency of the level of breach by students is given and a timely process of appeal is awarded to all students. Success in this petition's goals can result in improved student wellbeing and performance over submitted work and decreased workload on course coordinators and student counsellors
Action is necessary to assist in success across a variety of circumstances. AI detection tools like Turnitin are still in a stage of infancy, as such, universities like UWA, RMIT, Monash, and ANU have decided against implementing it until it can be further developed.
