The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, students of Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan and members of the school community, are calling for an immediate and compassionate review of the current school policies regarding student hair and makeup.

While we understand and respect the need for standard school uniform guidelines to promote a sense of community, the strict enforcement of policies that ban makeup or non-traditional hair—and the subsequent use of isolation or exclusion as punishment—is actively harming our children’s mental health.

For many young people today, managing severe anxiety, low self-esteem, and social phobias is a daily battle. For these students, being able to wear makeup to cover skin insecurities or styling their hair in a way that makes them feel secure is not an act of rebellion. It is a vital emotional safety blanket. It gives them the confidence to step through the school gates and engage in learning.

THE IMPACT OF THE CURRENT POLICY:

* Detrimental Isolation: Removing anxious students from the classroom and placing them in isolation or "reflection rooms" because of their hair or makeup does not fix a behavioral issue—it severely worsens their anxiety and punishes them for trying to cope.

* Loss of Education: Isolating children removes them from vital learning time, creating academic gaps and increasing the dread of coming to school.

* Flawed Priorities: A student’s capacity to learn, thrive, and be a good member of the school community is completely unaffected by the color of their hair or makeup. A strict focus on outward perfection should never come at the cost of a child's internal well-being.

OUR DEMANDS TO THE GOVERNING BODY:

1. Introduce a Compassionate Well-being Exception: Amend the policy to ensure that where hair or makeup is linked to a student's diagnosed or expressed anxiety and mental health needs, allowance is made.

2. End Isolation for Uniform/Appearance Violations: Cease the practice of removing children from lessons or isolating them away from their peers for appearance infractions.

3. Collaborate with Families: Work with parents and students to find a reasonable middle ground rather than enforcing blanket, rigid bans that result in emotional distress.

School should be a safe space where education and mental well-being are prioritized. Please listen to your community and change this policy.
