Revert Alberta Student Loan Mandatory Parental Contribution Policy
The Issue
As an Albertan student who hails from a middle-class family, my sister's dreams of completing higher education have been shattered by the recent changes in the Alberta Student Loans policy. It deeply affects those of us whose parents are assumed to be financial contributors, regardless of their willingness or ability to pay. This mandatory parental contribution policy is placing an undue burden on students.
Many families, while categorized as middle class, already stretch their budgets to cover the cost of living. The assumption that they can easily provide additional financial support for their children’s post-secondary education is misguided and ignores the economic realities of most families today.
According to Statistics Canada, the cost of university tuition, alongside living expenses, has been steadily rising. The average cost of a year of university exceeds $20,000 in major Canadian cities when considering tuition, rent, books, and other expenses. This increase is compounded by many families' rising expenses, stagnant wages, and other financial obligations.
Additionally, asking parents to contribute financially without considering these factors creates unnecessary conflict within families, placing students in an uncomfortable position of negotiating with their parents or seeking loans from other costly sources.
By reverting this policy, the government would not only relieve students from this additional stress but also promote a fairer system where financial support is based on individual student needs, not parental income. Many students excel academically and are eager to contribute positively to society; denying them access to education based on their parents' finances undermines their potential and the province's future.
We are urging the Alberta government to re-evaluate this policy for the benefit of current and future students who are being unfairly penalized. We recommend instead a needs-based assessment that considers the individual financial situation of students rather than relying on assumed financial contributions from parents.
