Reverse the Right to Buy changes: Give council tenants their path to homeownership back!
Reverse the Right to Buy changes: Give council tenants their path to homeownership back!
The Issue
We are calling on the UK Government and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to reverse the recent, restrictive changes made to the Right to Buy scheme.
The decision to increase the required living period from 3 years to 10 years, whilst slashing maximum discounts down to a 5%–15% range, has effectively locked millions of hard-working social housing tenants out of the property market. For decades, Right to Buy was a vital tool for social mobility, allowing working-class families to build generational wealth and secure their own futures.
While we understand the need to protect social housing stock, punishing long-term tenants by removing affordable paths to buying their homes is not the answer. The government should focus on building new social homes rather than stripping away the aspirations of existing residents.
By signing this petition, you are demanding that Parliament:
Restore the original qualifying period back to 3 years.
Reapply the previous discount rates of up to 70% based on years of tenancy.
Commit to a "one-for-one" replacement policy to build new council homes using sales revenue, instead of restricting tenant rights.
Please sign and share to help working families achieve the dream of owning their own home.
