The Issue

If you're reading this you're most likely a post secondary student or was going into post secondary soon. If you're not, that's still great because you still probably think that Doug Ford should change OSAP back. Since recently he announced that he would be changing OSAP from 75% grant and 25% loan to 75% loan and 25% grant. On top of that, he's letting schools raise tuition by 2% each year for the next 3 years. By the end of those 3 years, that can cost students about an extra $400-600 in tuition. The majority of students rely on OSAP to attend post secondary and Doug Ford is making it hard for them to get a degree to be successful in life.

At the same time, he is telling students to pursue careers in STEM, health care, trades, and tech. How does he expect students to afford those programs if the funding gets cut? Some students might not be able to afford school anymore and may have to drop out, switch schools or programs. This also affects students dreams of what they want to be, all because of his decision of not giving them the financial opportunity to go to school. By the time students graduate they will already be drowning in debt, which can set them back in life.

The cost of schooling is already high because it includes residence, meal plan, tuition, textbooks, and fees. The cost of living is also high for the majority of people living in Ontario, so as the cost of living continues to increase, so will the cost of everything listed for school, not just tuition. If students come from a lower to middle income family, they might not be able to attend school anymore. If this happens it will just keep them in a cycle of not getting further educated and put them at a greater disadvantage compared to students who come from wealthy families.

We need Doug Ford to reconsider these changes, as they will have negative consequences for students who want to do better and build better lives through education. I urge you to sign this petition to reverse the OSAP changes and ensure that education in Ontario remains accessible to all. Your support is needed and by signing this you're sending a message that the future of students should not be compromised.
