Reverse/Edit the LISD policy changes on Phone/Ipad Use

The Issue

UPDATE: As the school year gets closer, we (LISD students) have recived an unapproved list. Some notable on this list include:

  • Autodesk Sketchbook
  • Bamboo Paper - Notebook
  • Canva
  • Duolingo
  • iPastels
  • Kahoot
  • Khan Academy
  • Prodigy Math Game
  • Quizlet
  • Sumdog
  • Tayasui Sketches AKA sketches school

This is a small portion from a list with 423 entries. Not only are they banning drawing apps, but they are also banning LEARNING apps.

This next year, LISD is going to change the policy on Phone and IPad used. These changes include:

  • No acess to safari unless stated by students
  • Middle school students will no longer have the app store
  • "New" LISD managed app store (Most likely the one they used for Elementary school)
  • No ability to use phones, even BEFORE the school day
  • Most likey more restriction to sites

LISD is going overboard. Even before this change, LISD have resricted New York Times, Neal.fun, and wikipedia, yet still refused to block AI sites like Chatgpt.

This restriction of IPads will bring the fun out school when appropriate. LISD wants students to CONSTANTLY work and are actively discouraging fun. This will no doubt cause burnout for both students and teacher since they most likely have to provide more work for students.

It seems that LISD wants to completely remove even the possiblity of searching up innaporopriate content. Truthfully, I do not think the restrictions will ever change. LISD is trying to remove creativity from school, since drawing apps like ibis paint will most likely not be on this new appstore.

LISD does not have to completly remove the use of phones and the appstore. As far as I know, the teachers were already doing a stellar job with preventing kids from playing during work time due to apple classroom. The phone policy change is ridiculous though. What is professional about sitting in a poorly air conditioned gym?

It seems as if LISD want middle schoolers (11-13) to be adults. Execept, if we are supposed to be adults then where are our wages? If we are adults shouldn't we be able to drive? Shouldn't we be able to drink? Remind me, why aren't middle schoolers allowed to vote for local, state, and national election? It is because they are children.  If we are supposed to be adults then we deserve the respect of adults. School is not work. Middle schoolers are not adults.
