The issue

For many years, Year 5 students at our school have participated in an overnight excursion to Canberra. The trip provides opportunities to visit significant national institutions, including Parliament House, museums and national monuments, while learning about Australia's history, democracy and culture.

The school has recently advised families that it will trial a one-day Canberra excursion instead of the traditional overnight trip. The reason provided is the increasing complexity of managing student anxiety, medication requirements and other wellbeing needs during overnight excursions.

While families understand these challenges and appreciate the school's commitment to student wellbeing, many are concerned about the impact this change may have on students' overall experience.

A one-day excursion would involve approximately six hours of travel, reducing the amount of time available for educational activities in Canberra. It would also remove the overnight component that has long been part of the experience.

For many students, the overnight excursion is a valuable opportunity to develop independence, resilience, confidence and social skills in a supported environment. Learning to spend time away from home, manage belongings, navigate new situations and strengthen friendships are important developmental experiences that are difficult to replicate during a single-day trip.

By signing this petition, we ask the school to consult with families and explore options that would allow future Year 5 students to continue participating in an overnight Canberra excursion while addressing concerns around student wellbeing, supervision and medical support.
