Retain the existing street parking permit rules for Manly residents
The issue
For years, the existing street parking permit system in Manly has served residents and their guests efficiently.
The multi-use permit, a tangible, paper permit, provides a simple solution to accommodate visitors without the hassle of exceeding parking time limits and potentially receiving fines. Residents can conveniently hand this paper permit to their guests, who then display it in their vehicle, ensuring seamless and worry-free parking during their visit.
However, a proposed change by the council threatens to disrupt this straightforward and effective system. By transitioning to a digital format, the council plans to enforce a new multi-use permit system where residents must endure a cumbersome process involving setting up online accounts, verifying their residency, logging their guest's vehicle registration, and, after 40 visits per year, begin incurring a $5 fee—simply to allow guests to park without restriction.
This proposed change is not only inconvenient but also introduces unnecessary complexity into a system that currently functions well. Many residents, especially the elderly or those not technologically inclined, will struggle with the digital format, indeed those in the Tower Hill area ARE struggling as they have been guinea pigs for this new scheme.
The added financial burden of a $5 fee every time a guest visits is unreasonable and unfair, creating zero benefit to residents. Not to mention creating further barriers to those that find it hard to leave the house and rely on visitors as their only social stimulation.
We urge the council to scrap this proposed change and retain the current parking permit system.
- Maintain paper multi-use permits
- Allow motorbikes and scooters to legally park on the street without a permit
Please sign this petition to keep the existing parking permit rules in place and support a system that truly works for Manly residents.
