The new owner of NBN Television, WIN Corporation, plans to scrap weekend local news bulletins and change weekday news bulletins from 6-7pm to 5.30-6pm. For more than 60 years NBN has provided an hour-long bulletin at 6pm that, uniquely, mixes local news with state, national and international news. This format is a cornerstone of culture and civic life in the Greater Newcastle and Hunter regions. Degrading NBN News to the broadcast service level provided to much smaller regional towns is an insult to Australia’s seventh largest urban area. WIN Corporation’s decision fundamentally misunderstands Greater Newcastle and the Hunter, its national importance and its distinct culture. NBN News must remain an integrated, hour-long bulletin, seven days a week.
