Excessive and relentless political campaign advertising has taken a serious toll on our mental and emotional wellbeing; it inundates our mailboxes and the majority of our television viewing time, permeating and disrupting our daily lives. These relentless ads largely serve not to inform, but to widen societal divisions. The nonprofit "Center for Responsive Politics" found that the 2020 U.S. election was the most expensive in history with advertising costs at a staggering $14 billion (source: OpenSecrets.org). This phenomenon alienates the American public and jeopardizes a healthy democracy.
Putting a limit on the quantity and frequency of these ads, as well as halting direct mailings, could help maintain a balance between the necessary information and the public's mental health and societal unity.
